In case you do not know what the Drake Equation is, here is a paste from Wikipedia about it:
The Drake equation (sometimes called the Green Bank equation or the Green Bank Formula) is an equation used to estimate the number of detectable extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. It is used in the fields of exobiology and the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (SETI). The equation was devised by Frank Drake, Emeritus Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
common value = 10 (10 stars formed per year, on the average over the life of the galaxy)
fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets
common value = 0.5 (half of all stars formed will have planets)
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
common value = 2 (stars with planets will have 2 planets capable of developing life)
fl = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point
common value = 1 (100% of these planets will develop life)
fi = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life
common value = 0.01 (1% of which will be intelligent life)
fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
common value = 0.01 (1% of which will be able to communicate)
l = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space
common value = 10,000 years (which will last 10,000 years)
Here is the number of intelligent lives you think there is in our galaxy the Milk Way.
