Here is an example of using PHP with html form data to make a contact form for a web site. This is also a good example of grabbing HTML form data with PHP and using it. Here is the demo:
It has now been 1 year since I came up with the not so great idea of creating a photo blog. The theme of the site was to mock people being dochebags. I would plug it here but I am not so proud of it. But I do want to share some statistics of the site after being online. It might give an idea of what to expect if your thinking about a similar idea. Keep in mind that I did not try to promote the site. I just to put it up and updated it fairly regular. I was not able to track the visits from mobile phone that brought up the mobile version of the site. I just know that i received over 1,300 page views from phones.
I sorta debated if this was worth posting about, but I think it is worthy of a mention. I found this app in the Android market the other day after the default camera on my G2 was messing up. After seeing the photos I took with it I got really excited about it. It is due to my odd curiosity on old style photos.
The app is called Retro Camera from Urbian and is found in the Android market. I would not be surprise if it is in the iPhone market also. As of right now (not sure if they plan to update it) they have 5 camera you can use. Here is also examples of the pictures it takes. Just to note, I am not a great photographer .
The biggest pain is to discover that you need to change something in your site that covers 20 pages. When I created the Graveyard Database I kept running into the problem that i wanted to change something in the graveyard page. I would have to go to each page and make the changes. So I slowly learned to make a website very flexible from the start. Here is ways I found to make a site very flexible. Continue reading
This tutorial will show you how to insert a Google Map into your website with your photos plotted on the map as a overlay.
Google Picasa will plot your photos on a Google map if you use a camera that embeds the location in the photo like a Android Phone. If you do not have a such a fancy camera for it to automatically embed the information then Google Picasa will allow you to manually insert the information. Visit the Google Picasa site for more information.
After creating a Picasa account (free) and plotting your photos on a map , you can insert the Google map to your website. Here is the code and demo of how to do it:
I am do not want to bore anyone with all the complete details of Google Adsense, since Google does a good job explaining it. I just want to give an idea of how much money to expect….Just in case you did not know Google will pay you money for posting their ads on your sites. They will pay according to page impressions which is just page views and by people clicking on the ads. Not matter what ad Google has up it counts as an ad impression. Google uses eCPM to give you an average of how much you make per 1000 page impressions or how much to expect at a thousand. Here is how Google Adsense explains it:
Effective CPM doesn’t represent your earnings – rather, it’s calculated by dividing your earnings by number of page impressions, then multiplying by 1000. For example, if you earned $0.15 from 25 page impressions, then your eCPM would equal ($0.15/25)*1000, or $6.00. If you earned $180 from 45,000 impressions, your effective CPM would equal ($180/45,000)*1000, or $4.00.
The good news is that you do not have to reach 1000 ad impressions to make money. You can make a fraction of the eCPM depending on how many ad impressions. For example, if you did 93 ad impression in one day, you would make 93/1000 fraction of the amount per eCPM.
One thing that got me for the longest time is that I would have over $200 eCPM and only had like 20 impressions. So my thinking I could make a 1000 impressions and make $200. What i missed was that I had like one or two clicks that day that paid decent and it increased my eCPM. So in reality I would of not got that much, but probably just the money I already earned, unless i kept the percentage of clicks per impressions. To rely just on ad impressions will not earn you that much but maybe some change per 1000 ad impressions
So your main goal is to hope a lot people click on your ads. Clicking on an ad can pay on average .50 to over a dollar. It can be pass that range though. If you think of it, if you worry about getting a lot of ad impressions then more clicks will follow.
Google will pay after you rack up $100 dollars in earnings. Pretty sweat deal if you can bring a lot of people to your site and hopefully get a lot of clicks.
Early this year (2010) I started to take creating websites for the experience and for some extra pocket money from Google adsense. I thought I could create some decent/fair quality websites and track 100+ visitors a day. I was thinking it would be very simple because I was not expecting much from it. But I was fair from the truth.
I started by creating 3 sites: personal site (nathanhaze.com) with around 10 pages, a graveyard site (graveyardsdb.com) which is around 25+ pages, and web design tutorial (noobcoding.com) that maxed out at 20+ (now it is this site). It has now been about 6 months since they been up and I only get around 10 page views combined from Google Adsense per day. What a fry cry from expecting several hundreds of page views.
Most recently I started a third site, peoplewtf.com, which is a photo blog of douche bag guys. I know it is not the best idea, but I do curve out over 50 impressions daily with it. This is over 10 times what I make from the other sites combined. I am not discouraged cause I do see growth in the sites more I work on them . I remember getting a couple every other day to having 10 impressions daily and finial to average of 50 daily. I have to admit my sites are not the greatest or do I try to promote them. Fews times I tried on forum boards I would just get a spike for a couple of days.
Google Adsense is easy to set and easy to track. I would think typical you would expect 3 -5 dollars daily for a site on average. This adds up nicely to maybe pay a phone bill. I would recommend to add Google Analytics to your site to understand why people are coming to your site. You must be very patience. I see it as a growing fruit tree from seed (excuse the douche reference). As in that is will start off slow, but will grow to make decent money. There is other ad networks out there, but most of them will require that you have over 100k impressions per month.
